Let’s Talk about the Career Development…

When I first hear about the CDC at Newhouse, my mind went immediately to the Center for Disease Control (What?? The snow causes that much sickness?? Uh maybe I should rethink my school choice….) Lo and behold, the CDC is not a cousin to the center in Atlanta but instead is the Center for Career Development. And develop your career do they ever.

If you’re a current Newhouser and haven’t stepped foot into the bright and colorful office on the third floor of Newhouse 3, then shame on you. First off, they always provide coffee for you. Secondly, these are some of the friendliest faces at Newhouse, and third— What are you doing? If you haven’t gone to the CDC you are doing yourself and your career a great disservice. Not only do they hold regular resume critiques, but they are also the gatekeepers to the incredible Newhouse network of alumni.

Each semester, The Tina Press & David Rubin Career Development Center (CDC) host the job hunt seminar which provides tips on how and when to start networking, how to make the most of your time at Newhouse, suggestions as to what employers are looking for and how to make yourself the ideal candidate, and real life scenarios of what the job hunt after college is like (here’s a fun fact, most Newhouse students are hired within the first three months after graduation). After the seminar you receive a login to the Newhouse online database of alumni and your networking opportunities begin. The alumni on the Newhouse Network have chosen to be on there because they want to connect with current students at Newhouse; these are industry professionals looking for the next stars in the field.

The CDC provides other amazing opportunities such as cover letter critiques, LinkedIn lessons, interview practice and, of course, they constantly provide internship and job postings that people have sent to them. They also email out CDCgradnews weekly that details current job and internship opportunities as well as information about upcoming seminars, speakers and employer visits.

These are just some of the services that the CDC provides, but by far the greatest assets of the CDC are the individuals that work there. Go by and meet Bridget and Kelly, tell them what you hope to do and get on their radar, because these are the ladies that employers turn to first.
