Newhouse and Dineen Hall both get students from ‘Point A to Point B’

As a dual-degree graduate student at both Newhouse and the College of Law, I am fortunate enough to take advantage of two amazing educational experiences.

The Newhouse facilities have a very trendy, digital feel to them, with an underlying media-based theme prevalent throughout. Since much of what goes on at Newhouse, in some capacity, incorporates multimedia the buildings are equipped with state-of-the-art technology. The students of Newhouse are incredibly diverse, encompassing people of all backgrounds, and appear to be genuinely happy with their educational experience. These factors, in unison, create a very unique student experience for Newhouse students.

Dineen Hall, the home of the College of Law, has a very different atmosphere. The recently opened building in incredibly modern and was built with a focus on being environmentally friendly. Although the building also incorporates state-of-the-art technology like the Newhouse buildings do, the underlying feeling in Dineen Hall is one of stress and paranoia. The students of the College of Law are, for the most part, sarcastic, arrogant, and disinterested in anything other than their legal studies. The legal education process is inherently stressful and it’s easy to understand why when roaming the halls of Dineen Hall. Being in such an incredibly building, however, helps mitigate some of the negative impact and is much more conducive to a satisfactory educational experience.

Both buildings cater to the needs of their faculty and students incredibly well but in very unalike ways. The varying atmospheres perfectly illustrate the differences between the careers that Newhouse prepares students for when compared to the careers the College of Law prepares students for. I am incredibly lucky to have exposure to both schools during my time in Syracuse. Being someone who has very limited experience in multimedia-based content and those who specialize in such, having the chance to obtain an additional degree from Newhouse has been beneficial to me in a variety of ways. Obtaining exposure to distinct perspectives and getting a chance to expand my skillset have been of utmost importance.
