Explore Graduate Programs at Newhouse Open House

October 18, 2019

Graduate school can be intimidating, both for current undergraduate students and for prospective students who have been out of school for a while. Online research, email contacts, and promotional videos are fantastic resources, but nothing compares to actually stepping foot on campus and speaking with faculty and staff in person.

At Newhouse, we understand the benefits of campus visits. Every year, Newhouse offers a Master’s Open House, where prospective students can meet professors and program chairs, learn about financial aid opportunities, tour facilities and more.

This year’s Newhouse Open House is Friday, November 15 from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Registration is free online.

To learn more about the benefits of the Newhouse Open House experience, check out the testimonials from current master’s students who attended last year.

After my visit, I definitely knew Newhouse was where I wanted to go to grad school because of the transparency and information involving the programs, the cost of attendance, scholarships, etc. It seemed like a very prestigious institution but also one where the professors want students to do well. Because of this, Newhouse was the only grad school I applied to. [Meeting] Professor Regina Luttrell [at the Open House] was why I committed to Public Relations at Newhouse.

Lindsay Eastwood – Television, Radio and Film G’20

The fall Open House was very informing and really helped solidify my decision to apply. I got a chance to get an inside look of Newhouse and all that it has to offer, including the studios and equipment we get the chance to use. I also made a friend and, coincidentally enough, we both decided to come to [Newhouse] and have maintained that friendship ever since!

Kevin Carr – Public Relations G’20

I’ll be honest: coming in to the Open House, I was pretty nervous and a bit unsure of myself. I knew that going to graduate school would be tremendously beneficial, but it had also been five years since I last sat in a college classroom. Was I ready to go back to college? Attending the Open House really helped motivate me to come to Syracuse University. I discovered the myriad of benefits of attending the prestigious the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. The quality of education is superb, the faculty bring real world experience into the classroom, and there are many additional resources outside of the classroom to help students network, get internships, and learn and grow as professionals. I came in to the Open House with uncertainty, but left knowing for certain that Syracuse University would give me the greatest opportunity to advance my professional career.

Jada Grant – Television, Radio and Film G’20

[At my Open House visit] I thought [Newhouse] was amazing. The facilities here looked top-notch and I could tell I would gain a ton of experience being here. The faculty were extremely helpful and honest about how the program would be. [During my visit,] there were three people that impacted me: Lily McCausland, Professor Schoonmaker, and Professor Holmes. I met Lily and Professor Schoonmaker at the actual Open House and I spoke with Professor Holmes through email. All of them were able to tell me what I had to look forward to in the TRF program. They told me about the various options I had as far as classes went. They also provided me with examples of some of the work the students had done and even gave me insight on some of the vigorous tasks I would partake in as a student.

I pretty much knew before I came to the Open House that I wanted to come [to Newhouse]. Seeing everything in person basically just solidified my decision.

Cindi Edwards – Public Relations G’20

I really enjoyed listening to the professors and students Q&A. That was a great way for me to ask questions and got me really excited!

Mathew Wasserstrom – Advertising G’20

I wanted to come to Newhouse before attending the fall Open House and coming to it only further reinforced that. [At the Open House], I met Professors Stomski, Tsao, and O’Neill, as well as advertising student, Amari McFadden. Seeing the school firsthand and speaking to the faculty, I saw how much pride they took in their students and because of that, I knew I wanted to study here.

Ian Toner – Broadcast and Digital Journalism G’20

I met friends at Open House that I’m now spending hours with every day. I loved hearing about the professors’ passion for their craft and vision for their students.

Jennifer Phelps – Advertising G’20

Attending Open House confirmed that I wanted to attend Newhouse for my master’s degree. I enjoyed getting to meet current students and the head of the advertising department [James Tsao]. Hearing where past students end up after [the program], as well as what the coursework entailed, reassured me that Newhouse would be the best place for me to further my education.
