The PR Program So Far

The PR Program So Far

By Sid Bahl

Nearly three months into the public relations program, I can honestly say that it has been everything I hoped it would be and much more. My analytical process has completely changed and I now have a much more diversified perspective. I am, admittedly, not the most creative person but the Newhouse public relations program doesn’t require you to be. My professors have taught in such a way that allows a broad audience to comprehend and learn the subject matter.

Thus far, I’ve taken classes in public relations writing, graphic design, media law, and public relations theory. Each class has been uniquely independent in that it touches upon a part of public relations that the others don’t. The classes also intertwine and I am beginning to see the “cumulative” effect of the program.

I am now in the process of preparing for my first public relations internship this coming spring. Professor Bill Smullen, Director of the National Securities Program at Maxwell and an adjunct professor at Newhouse, facilitates this process. Over 50 local organizations partner with the Newhouse public relations program and allow students to have the opportunity to obtain public relations experience locally. Professor Smullen meets with public relations students individually and helps them through the exciting endeavor.

I’m very excited to have the chance to put what I’ve learned to practical use!
