It was right around this time last year that I underwent a minor surgery to sort out some things that were in disarray. It was also around this time of year that I attended Newhouse’s Master’s Preview Day, which is what ultimately sealed my decision to attend the school.
In many respects, I can’t believe it’s already been a year. In others, I can’t believe it’s only been a year. It seems like a lifetime ago that I was undecided about attending. But inside I was torn — very literally by scalpel cuts, but also between whether to pursue my long-time passion of writing (at another school), or take on a new kind of challenge in advertising.
Preview Day gave me the opportunity to meet not only current students (all of whom spoke highly of the program), but also admitted students (who would soon become my classmates). The panels that were held gave me a much clearer idea of what to expect in terms of workload, the types of coursework, life/work balance, the unique opportunities and resources of Newhouse, how to pay for school, how to find an apartment, and — most importantly — it gave me a firsthand look at how professional of a program Newhouse really is. From the moment you’re admitted, professors become invested in your success in the program, and genuinely want to help, even if it’s in making the decision of whether or not this is the right place for you. Everyone I spoke to provided honest answers to my questions; even if the answer wasn’t necessarily the one I was hoping to hear, the sincerity and honesty was always appreciated. Within hours, I was sold on what I had experienced in an afternoon at Newhouse. And even though I got a little lost looking for particular offices, I knew there was nowhere I’d rather be wandering than in these three buildings.
If you’ve stumbled on this page because you’ve recently been admitted to one of the programs, first of all, congratulations! This is just the beginning of an indescribably exciting journey. If you’re still undecided about whether or not to attend, I truly recommend stopping by the April 7th Preview Day. It can really help you sort out the twisted feeling in your gut, whether it’s figurative or literal.
