MNO Capstone

MNO Capstone

The summer capstone is a project that graduate students in the Magazine, Newspaper and Online Journalism program work on to produce an iPad Magazine. This year, we are working on the September issue of a parkour and freerunning magazine called Vertical Floor. It is about the discipline, the people who practice it (traceurs), and the things that they love. We are at the halfway mark and things are coming along nicely! Check out some of our photos and get updates via our social media pages.

The capstone is a great opportunity to get hands on experience with reporting, writing, editing, photography, videography, and graphic design. At Newhouse you will learn so much about each of these things and the capstone is where you put all those things to use to produce an entire magazine. This six-week experience functions as any magazine publication does and the students in the program produce everything. What is unique about this program is that it allows you to do the things that you love to do, but the iPad magazine is not the only capstone option. There are three options: work full time on the iPad magazine, work part-time on the iPad magazine and part-time at a local internship, or find an offsite internship and write a research paper. I chose the second option. I interned at Bentley-Hall, Inc., which publishes International Musician and Making Music Magazine during my spring semester and I enjoyed it so much that I wanted to continue. For me, this option was the best because it allowed me to be involved with the iPad magazine, but also continue getting more clips at my internship.
