MNO Practicum: Interning in Central New York

by Pablo Mayo Cerquerio, MNO '14

The Magazine, Newspaper and Online Journalism program offers an internship practicum in the spring. Pablo Mayo Cerqueiro, MNO '14, details his experience in the practicum.

I’m really glad I decided to take Newhouse’s Newspaper and Magazine Practicum class because it’s giving me great hands-on professional experience.

Since January, I’ve been interning part-time with SU Magazine—the university’s alumni publication. Through my internship, I’m learning how a magazine operates as I participate in several steps of the editorial process. I write profile and enterprise stories and assist with copyediting. And knowing that my work will be published is a great incentive to excel myself.

Interacting with my editor is also an essential part of my learning experience. He’s helped me adapt to a new publication and audience and answered my questions on how to deal with all sorts of professional issues. As a matter of fact, my working environment is very welcoming and friendly.

In addition to the internship itself, all the students in the class meet with our professor every two weeks to share anecdotes and advice. In this way, we get to see how other publications work, so we can compare one another’s experiences with our own.

In a nutshell, if you’re looking to improve your resume, have fun and learn from both professionals and peers, you can’t miss out on this class.
