Exploring the Finger Lakes

Exploring the Finger Lakes

In case the many posts about outdoor activities have not given you a hint, summertime in Central New York is absolutely marvelous. The weather is neither sweltering nor frigid, and towns from the Finger Lakes up through the Adirondack Mountains come alive with summertime travelers. There are towns close to Syracuse that are definitely worth a day trip, and places a bit further that may require a weekend. Today, I’m going to focus on a town southwest of Syracuse that makes for a perfect day trip; Skaneateles, New York.

The village, located on the shore of Skaneateles Lake, offers a wonderful place to stroll, shop and eat. Begin the day with a delicious pastry from The Corner at Skaneateles Bakery (the salted caramel cupcakes are out of this world) and then explore the specialty shops lining either side of the main street. A few of my favorites include Skaneateles300', The Vermont Green Mountain Specialty Co. Inc., and Creekside Books & Coffee. Creekside is located a little outside the main street; but is a warm and cozy spot that offers Trivia Night every Thursday and live music on the weekends.

If you work up an appetite exploring, the village offers a restaurant for any type of craving you may have. Doug’s Fish Fry features fresh fish and an awesome atmosphere. Around the corner, Gilda’s serves delicious and unique small plates with a variety of craft beers, wine and sangria. Cross the street and enjoy a beautiful view of the lake at the Bluewater Grill – and definitely try their baked brie.

Following lunch or dinner, wander down to the lake and stroll out onto the pier for a breathtaking view of one of the cleanest and clearest lakes in New York. If you wish to see more of the lake, Mid-Lakes Navigation offers daily cruises from May to October ranging from a 50-minute sightseeing tour to an evening dinner cruise. Don't leave without grabbing a loaf of bread from Patisserie or trying their delicious cookies and mini-pies, you could not ask for a better end to the day.

I hope I’ve convinced you to take the 45-minute drive and fall in love with this wonderful town. I promise that you won’t regret it. If you are feeling a bit more ambitious, check out this article outlining a complete day trip winding through Skaneateles and continuing on through the Finger Lakes. Check back next week for another day trip suggestion – right in the backyard of Syracuse!
