Sunshine in the Summertime

Sunshine in the Summertime

Summer is officially here in Syracuse, and as a "townie" who lives here year round, my first piece of advice to all the arriving students is to enjoy every moment of sunshine as much as you can. The temperature drops quickly in the fall, and the white flakes seem to arrive earlier and earlier each year. Below is a quick list of great outdoor spots to hike, picnic and catch some rays.

Onondaga Lake Park: One of the most popular parks in Central New York, this park offers a variety of activities including boat rentals, archery, fishing, bike rentals and hiking on four different trails. A short car ride from the university, this park makes for a great day trip with friends!

The Onondaga Creekwalk – Beginning downtown in Armory Square and ending on the southern shore of Onondaga Lake, this is perhaps one of the most attractive trails to walk in Syracuse. It’s a 2.6 mile walk and includes sections of the Inner Harbor, the Barge Canal and the historic structures in Franklin Square. It’s quite easy to lose the first half mile of the trail which zig zags through the city so be sure to follow the signs – but it is definitely a trail worth following to the end for beautiful views!

The Erie Canal State Park Trail: Designated as a National Recreational Trail by the National Parks Service, this 36-mile path along the original 363-mile Erie Canal offers a great place for biking, fishing, canoeing or simply enjoying an outdoor picnic.

The outdoor areas mentioned above are great places to get some fresh air in the city but if you’re feeling adventurous, or just need a break from Syracuse, below are a few picturesque places outside of the city.

Green Lakes State Park: Located east of Syracuse in the town of Manlius, Green Lakes State Park features two glacial lakes known for their unusual blue and green color. A beautiful trail surrounds the entire lake, and the park also offers a swimming area, picnic tables and a public golf course.

Jamesville Beach Park: Looking for a place to cool off on one of these hot summer days? Try the water of Jamesville Reservoir – rent boats, play volleyball or hike before cooling off!

If none of the above appeal to you, or you’re tight on time, take part in a “park-like experience" offered at the university. Enjoy summer movies on the quad or use the volleyball and tennis courts at South Campus to play a pick-up game with friends!
