How To Survive Finals Week at Newhouse

How To Survive Finals Week at Newhouse

As we get into the last few weeks of classes, I am positive that most people are slowly starting to freak out about final exams. Welcome the late nights, comfy sweatpants and copious amounts of coffee that even the Gilmore Girls would be impressed by. Yes, finals week is stressful. However, there are some tips to doing it right.

Start Early

So many people wait until the night before to study for a huge exam. However, this method is not conducive to receiving a good grade. Staying up all night, you’re already going to be tired, and cramming all of the information into your head in one sitting makes it easier for you to mix things up on the exam. Start studying 3 days in advance for an exam. Try to study a little each day, reviewing all of the material on the last day. That way, you’ll be able to study the material better and be well-rested for your test.

Group Study Sessions

Some people prefer to study alone, but in my experience, having a group study at least once helps better prepare you for your exam. This is especially helpful when you’re starting to get tired studying alone in your dorm room or library. Working together helps you to cover more information, get different perspectives and can help clarify things you don’t quite understand.  Usually, someone understands the things that you don’t understand and vice versa. Being able to give and receive information is super helpful in being 100% prepared.

Take Study Breaks

Studying for 3 days straight — and not sleeping, eating or breathing for that matter — is a recipe for disaster. Doing this, you’re going to be fatigued both physically and mentally, and you’ll  eventually to crash and burn. Take a break while studying, even if it’s just to eat or take a shower. Don’t take a book with you to eat, and don’t try reciting things in the shower. Give your brain a rest. Other good ways to take a break are to watch a short TV show, talk to a friend on the phone, go for a walk or exercise.

Rest Up

Again, it is so important while studying to have an ample amount of sleep. Your body needs rest, and you need energy. Sleep deprivation can inhibit your ability to focus, think and remember information — all things you DON’T want while studying for exams. Try to get a decent amount of sleep each night during finals week. I promise you, all nighters do not get you A’s.

I hope these tips will help you all in the upcoming weeks! Good luck studying and have a wonderful break!
