Newhouse Students Take On High Ropes (And Win)
Every summer, the Graduate Records Office at Newhouse puts together events for its new class of master’s students. These events are a chance for students to get to know their classmates — both in their own and in other programs — and a way to unwind from what is usually a stressful week of Bootcamp.
For this year’s first event, the GRO invited students to participate in a Challenge Course at Syracuse University’s Outdoor Education Center located on South Campus. It was the perfect way to kick off six weeks of exciting events, as students got the chance to get up close and personal with their peers in more ways that one.
The day started out with some group bonding and teamwork exercises, where students learned each others names and problem solving styles as they tried to pass a ball between 14 people in under 5 seconds. They did it in 2 — we’re pretty sure it’s a record.
The students then trekked up to the high ropes course, where they worked in teams of five to complete obstacles included moving between platforms over 30 feet in the air and walking across wires while making sure their classmates weren’t far behind. Everyone faced their fears as they zoomed across a zip line, and enjoyed a well-deserved lunch at the Inn Complete with Dean Kaplan to end a great day.
