Where To Adopt Pets In Syracuse
Syracuse is becoming colder and colder now. However, many dogs and cats are still homeless or under difficult situations. According to American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), there are approximately 6.5 million companion animals entering U.S. animal shelters nationwide every year. Of those, approximately 3.3 million are dogs and 3.2 million are cats. And each year, approximately 1.5 million shelter animals are euthanized (roughly 670,000 dogs and 860,000 cats). Although these numbers have declined in recent years, there are still a lot of things we could do to make it better.
THE HUMANE ASSOCIATION OF CNY (HUMANE CNY)
HumaneCNY, located in Liverpool NY, is a no-kill, not-for-profit animal shelter. Its mission is to find loving homes for the animals who need them. When you visit HumaneCNY, a staff member will help you decide which animal will best fit you and your lifestyle. You will have time to get to know the animal’s likes and dislikes and how they would fit into your life. When you decide you want to adopt, one of the staff members will review guidelines and procedures with you and will help you fill out an application.
All applicants are supposed to provide a valid NYS driver’s license or NYS non-driver photo ID, a proof of steady income and a signed copy of their lease stating that animals are allowed. “I really like HumaneCNY. People there are very friendly and responsible,” said Michael, who recently adopted a cat from the shelter.
Additionally, HumaneCNY and VCA Animal Hospitals have teamed up to ensure that every pet is healthy. They offer a complimentary overall wellness exam (within five days after adoption) and a complimentary 10-day follow-up care for some diseases, including ear and eye infections, urinary tract infections and etc.
Central New York SPCA (CNY SPCA)
CNY SPCA, an animal shelter based on Syracuse, is also a good place to adopt pets. Besides dogs and cats, CNY SPCA also has turtles, birds and etc. Similar to HumaneCNY, CNY SPCA has strict adoption guidelines as well. Every applicant must be at least 21 years old, providing a picture ID, with their name and current address. Moreover, all dogs must be licensed with your town prior to leaving the CNY SPCA.
For cats and dogs, the adoption fee is 50 dollars and covers the following:
- Veterinary Examination
- Microchipping
- Rabies Vaccine
- Spay / Neuter
- Kennel Cough Vaccine
- DHPP Virus Vaccine
- Flea preventative and dewormer
For ferrets and rabbits, the adoption fee is 20 dollars. And for birds, the adoption fee may vary depending on species. If you have room in your heart and in your home, somebody waits for you at the Central New York SPCA. And I wish that every animal is placed in a loving, responsible home where that animal will be cherished and respected for the rest of his or her life.
Both of these institutions are reliable. If you want to adopt a pet, I believe there are the right places you could go. And if you don’t, you still can consider to support them by donating some money, food or heating pads. Your donations allow them to continue to provide excellent medical care, love, and a safe haven for their lost, abandoned, neglected, and surrendered animals. Thanks for your help.
