The Art Of Networking
How to make connections beyond the Syracuse market
Building your network is a gold ticket to success when it comes to your career. Whether it is getting a job or gaining a broader insight into the industry, networking is your biggest asset. Additionally, by receiving input from an industry professional, you can become more acquainted with the industry itself and ensure that you are on the right track.
At Newhouse, there are two tools that you can utilize to build your network; the professors and the professionals from the Career Development Centre (CDC). These resources are a great step in building yur network. The CDC is a good tool to make use of during anyone’s time at Newhouse. Most notably, they offer courses where students can familiarize themselves with tools to build their network. After two training sessions, students have access to the Newhouse Alumni Network. While we have not left the University grounds just yet, there are three resources students can benefit from that can help them build their global network as well.
When it comes to making connections outside of the University, there are major markets in the surrounding area. Syracuse sits right in-between my home town of Toronto and New York City. Talk about being sandwiched into opportunity!
Toronto offers the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), which I encourage all students to take advantage of. It is a great opportunity to build your network internationally with professionals from a plethora of global markets.
Newhouse also hosts a brunch during the festival located on the festival grounds. Brunch attendees include alumni, professors, and industry professionals. Events are also a great experience – just think about how many people are attending and the countless opportunities there are to have one on one time. Attending events puts you at an advantage because of you and the professional are already there. I would highly recommend taking full advantage of TIFF which occurs in September. Toronto is only a 4.5-hour drive and there is no festival pass required to partake in events.
When it comes to other major cities like NYC, Boston or Chicago, your LinkedIn profile is your main asset. Using LinkedIn to reach out to professionals is one way to build your network. I have learned first hand that it is best to send a message when you send a request for a connection. This will help the professionals get acquainted with who you are. With that being said, once you are connected you can explain to the professional that you will be coming to town and would love to connect with them for a coffee.
This message can be used countless times and filtered while you are travelling. Another tip is that it is good to mention what you would like to chat about and why you are reaching out to them specifically.
