The Marty Glickman Awards Did Things Differently This Year

The first non-broadcaster to ever win the award, Sandy Montag ’85 made history on Wednesday, November 6th. Although, this award winner’s efforts are not unnoticed within the industry. Sandy Montag ’85, is the chief executive officer of The Montag Group and has a long list of major clients within the field, some even fellow Glickman award winners.

“I am proud that Sandy represents me in my professional life, and I’m even more proud that he’s my great friend,” said McDonough, 2016 Glickman Award Winner and play-by-play commentator with ESPN.

The Marty Glickman Award derives from sportscasting legend Marty Glickman, class of 1939. The award marks the history and success that Newhouse has in training industry leaders in the sport media fields.

The annual award show is put on by the Newhouse Sports Media Center. Program director Olivia Stomski an award-winning producer and proud graduate of The Newhouse School, class of 01. Before her time at Newhouse, Stomski was producing and directing over 100 live events a year countrywide. Three years ago Stomksi, decided to make a change and come back to her alma mater. Stomski balances working as a professor at Newhouse, serving as the sports director and producing games nationwide.

As mentioned, this is the first winner who is not a sports broadcaster however, can be considered an asset to the sports media industry. The CEO represents a realm of talent within the industry. Before starting his sports and entertainment agency, Montag began at IMG, where he worked for 30 years and met his wife. Four years ago, Montag made the deciscion to become an entrepreneur and start his own business. His passion for the industry is evident through his roles as an executive producer for three different documentaries: Amazon Prime’s “All or Nothing: The Michigan Wolverines,” Showtime’s “Perfect in ’76” and ESPN’s “The Class That Saved Coach K.”

His willingness to help others is also apparent through his charity work and involvement in multiple universities where he sits on the sports management board of three different colleges: Syracuse University, The University of Michigan and New York University. The New York Native also is apart of the advisory board for the Barclays Center located in Brooklyn, New York.

Award winners in the past include Bob Costas ’74 (2013), Marv Albert ’63 (2014), Beth Mowins G’90 (2015), Sean McDonough ’84 (2016), Mike Tirico ’88 (2017) and Ian Eagle ’90 (2018). These big names are industry leaders, all who on-air talent within the big networks: NBC, Turner, ESPN and CBS. Although, Montag was the first award winner that was not a broadcaster, his mark on the industry does not go unnoticed especially from fellow award winner Mike Tirico who called The Montag Group “a leadership-driven organization.”
