The F.U.T.U.R.E Of Education
Although I am studying broadcast journalism with a concentration in sports communication, I have always had a passion for education. To me, education at any level is essential and can push you forward in so many areas. There is so much knowledge out there–you can pretty much start anywhere and work your around. However, I believe that education starts when you are are younger and only enhances as you age.
I think as children, it is crucial to be exposed to school, but particularly a vast amount of knowledge because this is how you can begin to develop your interests, career path, etc. Knowledge can come in the form of experiences, interactions, etc. Knowledge can teach us our likes and dislikes and even brew a form of curiosity that we never thought was possible.
All of this resonates with me so deeply, because learning is something that I have held as valuable to me for as long as I can remember. In addition, it pains me to see the public school system falling apart year by year, especially in Philadelphia. Children are not receiving access to the latest materials, the conditions of the schools are at times unfit for learning an teachers are struggling to make ends in order to effectively carry out their curriculums and lesson plans. I have watched many of my peers discontinue their education in part because of not having the proper resources and feeling as though they weren’t supported in school.
While I don’t expect everyone to go out and strive for their master’s degree, I know education can give others the opportunities to explore avenues that they didn’t even think were possible.
As a result, I have decided that I want to start my own non-profit organization upon graduation. The organization will focus on providing funding to public schools. This funding will help with uniforms for students, school supplies for teachers/students, new and up-to-date materials; all things that will allow for a productive learning environment. This has been a thought of mine for quite some time and after doing some research I know that the goal is attainable.
I want to allow students to have opportunities that my peers and I didn’t always have and make no excuse to not show up to school every day ready to learn. I want students to not solely rely on sports and music when education doesn’t seem to be working out the way they would like. I want teachers to not have to come out of their pockets even more than they already do just to provide the best learning atmosphere for their students. I want public schools as a whole to continue to enhance on a yearly basis and make students feel comfortable and supported.
I have witnessed firsthand where families are struggling to send their children to school and I want to eliminate as much of this as I can.
I know that this task won’t be accomplished overnight, but with hard work, dedication and a support system, anything is possible.
I want to call the organization F.U.T.U.R.E: (Forever Uplifting, Teaching and Unifying Resilient Environments).
